McCoy faces dilemma over Grand National ride
TONY McCOY is facing a dilemma over whether to ride last year's winner Don't Push It or Welsh National winner Synchronised in the John Smith's Grand National.
Immediately after riding Synchronised to Chepstow glory McCoy had nailed his colours firmly to the mast of the horse whose victory played no small part in his being named the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year, but the champion jockey hinted on Monday that he may yet switch allegiance.
The weights for the National are published on February 15 and McCoy is aware that Don't Push It could be given abig weight, which would make his task of winning back-to-back Nationals particularly difficult.
McCoy said: "Realistically Don't Push It is going to be handicapped on his form of last year, which is going to make it tough for himbecause Red Rum was the last horse to win back-to-back Grand Nationals.
"I have watched horses in recent years who I thought were very capable of winning back-to-back Grand Nationals - Hedgehunter was one. He was a very good Grand National winner when he won and was second behind Numbersixvalverde the next time. Comply Or Die was a very good Grand National winner and he couldn't win again so it is getting hard for horses to win back-to-back Grand Nationals.
"At the same time it would be hard not to ride Don't Push It as he gave me the best day of my racing life."
Asked about whether he thought Synchronised would be suited by Aintree's big fences McCoy added on At The Races: "You don't know until they have a go. Some horses I thought would be very good weren't and vice versa - horses you think won't be very nice tend to jump well."
Don't Push It is as short as 14-1 for the April 9 marathon while Synchronised can be backed at 25-1.
