Geordieland (left) retired after finishing sore in Cup

GEORDIELAND, the enigmatic and popular stayer, has been retired after finishing sore in Thursday's Artemis Goodwood Cup.

The ten-year-old came home last of the 15 runners in the 2m race and appears to have aggravated the old leg injury that kept him off the track for nearly two years.

Speaking on Thursday evening, trainer Jamie Osborne said: "Unfortunately we're pretty sure he's injured the leg that he injured before and he's now retired.

"He's been a wonderful fella to have around and it's a shame. His owners [Tony Taylor, Kevin Conlan and Dean Carberry] have been very patient and it's sad that's it's ended the way it has."

Geordieland arrived in Britain from France in 2006 and proved a wonderful servant for connections, winning two Group 2s and finishing runner-up to Yeats in the Gold Cup in 2007 and 2008.

When asked which performance stood out the most during his career, Osborne nominated the Henry II Stakes success at Sandown in 2009.

"He gave us some fantastic days and when he beat Patkai that was undoubtedly the best run of his life, that was the one that gave us the most pleasure," he said.

With total career earnings in excess of £540,000 and plenty of top-class form, Osborne is hopeful that Geordieland can now have a life at stud, perhaps in France.

The trainer added: "He's still an entire and I'd like to think there's a small stallion job for him, perhaps in France as a National Hunt stallion.
"He's a three-time Group 2 winner and multiple Group 1 placed. He's always been a seriously talented horse and doesn't owe us anything."
